Sports quiz show host Nick Hancock donned his soccer boots for a charity match in memory of a footballer who died of cancer.

Nick, presenter of the BBC TV show They think It's All Over, starring Gary Lineker and David Gower, teamed up with Radio 5 Live talk show host Nicky Campbell for the game, which raised about £2,000 for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.

The match was a tribute to former Royal SunAlliance player Simon Long, who died from cancer last year after eight years with the club.

Fantasy Football League's David Baddiel was expected to play in the game at the RSA ground in North Heath Lane, Horsham, but pulled out two days beforehand due to clashing engagements.

Hancock scored with the last kick of the match to earn his side, Bostocks FC, a 2-2 draw with RSA.

Diana Stenning, area executive for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, who attended the game, said: "It was a really good afternoon and we are grateful for everyone's support. Few causes are as emotive or as universal as the need to find new treatments and ultimately cures for cancer.

"Two in five people in the UK will be affected by cancer at some time in their lives and currently one in four will die from the disease."

The fund employs about 1,000 scientists and doctors in the search for a cure.

Nick Taylor, the spokesman for insurance firm Royal SunAlliance, said: "It was very fitting for Nick to equalise with the last kick of the game.

"We had a good turnout and we hope to do it again next year."

Other attractions for visitors included a bouncy castle, barbecue and stalls.

The football club staged a disco in the evening to swell funds even further.
