St Leonards banked a valuable point with a 1-1 draw against third place Newport IOW last night.

But with better finishing at a fog-bound Firs it could have been all three. For once it was St Leonards who made the early running and Carlton Chatelier had a header cleared off the line, but they deserved their 18th minute lead when Keith Miles flicked home a corner at the near post.

Saints shaded the first half goal chances with Paul Ruddy, Chatelier and Peter Baker having other efforts. However the islanders had a couple of their own and they levelled on the stroke of half time when Gary Green netted from 12 yards.

Soon after the break Chatelier went clean through but could not beat Newport keeper Neil Hards and the same player dragged another chance wide later on. Ashley Wright brought a good save out of Graham Bannatyne as Saints went on to claim a deserved draw.
