Jo Hesketh and Gareth Brown created history when they won the Sussex 20km Road Walking titles at Steyning.

The new event replaced the Sussex Ten-Mile Championship which had been staged for over 70 years. Back in September, Brown won the Sussex 10,000m track title following an 18-month hip problem.

With club mates Darrell Stone and Donald Bearman competing in the Isle of Man, Brown was under little pressure as he romped home at Steyning. Brown finished nearly 15 minutes ahead of his nearest rival, clubmate Hesketh.

Hesketh retired from the women's county 10,000m race last September but has since strung together a series of good performances as she bids for a place in Britain's World Cup team.

At Steyning, Hesketh led the chasing group behind Brown and she never looked like being deprived of second place overall. Her finishing time was just over one minute outside the qualifying time for the World Cup. She is determined to walk it in the National Championships at Leicester next month.

Worthing middle distance runner Sarah Davey has been chalking up some good results in Indianapolis where she is studying Sports Science at Butler University. In a recent Area Track Meet, Davey won the 5,000m in 17min. 06.06sec, which takes her to seventh place on the Sussex all-time best list.
