Soldiers searching the home of a depressed man have uncovered an

arsenal of weapons, including two handguns.

The discovery of 80-year-old Peter Watford's body at his home in Chalvington Drive, St Leonards, last week sparked an immediate evacuation of nearby homes after detonators were found.

It is believed he may have taken his own life. Hundreds of people were evacuated for a night amid fears other bombs may have been hidden.

Now, after a search of Mr Watford's property by experts from the Royal Engineers, the full details of Mr Watford's weapons collection have been revealed. Soldiers also found pyrotechnic equipment, thunderflashes and amm-unition along with the handguns and detonators.

Acting Chief Insp Mike Fagan, of Hastings Police, said Mr Watford had extensive knowledge of weapons after serving in the RAF, which gave rise to concerns his home could be booby-trapped. But after a two-day search none was discovered.
