Tory councillor Geoffrey Theobald is calling for the restoration of BBC Radio Sussex.
He is asking Brighton and Hove Council to make a formal request for the change to BBC management. Radio Sussex was merged with Radio Surrey to form Southern Counties Radio, a station which also takes in part of Hampshire.
Coun Theobald, opposition leader on the council, made his plea after hearing the BBC is dividing its Thames Valley station into separate stations for Berkshire and Oxfordshire.
He said: "People in Newbury were complaining they had nothing in common with those in Witney. But those two towns are far closer to each other than many places in Sussex are with towns in Surrey. Sussex has a population of more than one-and-a-half million and deserves to have its own BBC local radio station."
