Two millennium events are to join forces after a clash of dates prompted fears for one of the biggest celebrations in Sussex.

West Sussex County Council is planning to stage a world record Mexican Wave on the South Downs involving up to 20,000 people.

But planning was thrown into disarray when it emerged a second major event will also be taking place on June 24 - a 60-mile trek to raise money for poverty-stricken Gurkhas. Now the council and organisers of Trailwalker are holding meetings to find a way for both events to go ahead.

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said today: "We are quite happy about it and there will not be a major clash. "By the time the Gurkha run is over there will only be a few stragglers on the route of the Mexican Wave and they will be welcome."
