Burgess Hill fought back from 2-0 down to snatch a point away to Selsey in the only County League division one game to go ahead.

All other first division matches were postponed as rain swept across Sussex. And it looked like a storm was brewing for the reigning champions as relegation threatened Selsey stormed into a commanding lead.

The deadlock was broken on ten minutes when Jon Bines sent over a cross for Stewart Morey to head home. It got even better for Selsey 13 minutes into the second half when Ian Ford unleashed a super strike to notch his 11th goal of the season. But Burgess Hill dragged themselves back into the contest seven minutes later when former Worthing striker Tony Holden finished off a neat move to make it 2-1.

Five minutes from time, the Hillians drew level when Paul Williams sent over a free kick which young defender Jay Head buried for only his second goal of the season. Selsey boss Danny Hinshelwood said: "We thoroughly deserved a point and should have got all three. "When we went 2-0 up I thought we had done enough, but they are a good side and they came back well.'

Hinshelwood admitted to mixed emotions afterwards. He added: "Burgess Hill were champions last year and will be in the top three again this time.

"Before the match I would have settled for a 2-2 draw, but we have set better standards for ourselves these days and I am disappointed not to win."

Three other senior games went ahead in the County League and there were plenty of goals around. A brace from Howard Stevens, taking his tally to four in two games, helped Hailsham come from behind to beat Withdean 2-1 in the third round of the Division Two Cup. Lewis Claydon had earlier put the visitors ahead.

Division two leaders Sidlesham twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Southwick. Goals from Junior Lamont and Lee Butler twice put Wickers ahead, but Calvin Hore and Steve Warwick netted to secure a point.

Worthing United ended an eight-game losing sequence as they drew 3-3 with high-riding Lancing, who now move into the top three. Tony Miles and Dale Brunton twice put Lancing ahead, but the lead was cancelled out by Alan Lewis and Gavin Jones. Chris Bladen then fired Worthing into a 3-2 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining, but Brunton struck again to snatch a point for Lancing.
