A SUSSEX woman plunged 1,000ft to her death in a mountain climbing accident.
Annie Watson, from Southwick, was tackling the highest peak in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands with her boyfriend Ian Lees and another climber when the tragedy happened.
Annie, 49, lost her footing on ice near the summit of Spidean a' Choire Leith in the Torridon mountains.
The three climbers were negotiating a traverse along a treacherous narrow ridge of the imposing mountain which towers over Loch Torridon when Ms Watson, a freelance editor, plunged 1,000ft.
A local mountain rescue team and an RAF helicopter search and rescue crew from Lossiemouth were called in.
A ground team scoured the gullies for more than three hours before Ms Watson's body was found at the bottom of Coire Dhub Mor.
They belonged to the Hastings Hill and Fell Walking Club and were believed to be well equipped for the climb.
