Burgess Hill have landed the first knock-out blow in the battle of the County League heavyweights.

Gary Croydon's men booked their place in the semi-finals of the RUR Cup, where they will face local rivals Hassocks, after a determined display at wet and windy Priory Lane.

All the goals came in the first half but there was no hint of the drama to come after a scrappy first 13 minutes.

The game came to life when Langney's Matt Allen capitalised on a slip by Cameron Johnson to beat Richard Waters at the second attempt, although Waters raced to the halfway line in protest, claiming that Allen had handled the ball.

Allen almost doubled Langney's lead six minutes later when his pace embarrassed Daren Newman, but he his right-foot shot hit the far post.

It proved a costly miss as the visitors grabbed two goals in five minutes.

Daren Pearce diverted Tony Holden's right-wing cross past his own keeper to make it 1-1, and, on 25 minutes, Tony Burt's clearance fell to Paul Williams and he beat Ollie Oxley from 25yards.

Langney were level 12 minutes later when Andy Ducille pulled the ball back to Allen who slammed in his 24th goal of the season.

Mark Cable was at fault for that goal but he made amends by scoring what turned out to be the match winner two minutes later.

Williams was the provider with a superb free-kick deep on the left and Cable rose above a clutch of defenders to send a powerful header into the bottom corner.

In a disappointing second half, Waters made a spectacular save from a shot from an acute angle by Langney sub Paul Balch.

Croydon said: "That was a committed performance. Guys like Thomsett and Newman were superb and our younger players will have learned a lot."

REECE Head scored nine minutes from time to put Saltdean in the RUR Cup Final. He secured a 2-1 win over Selsey, Damian Dobbyn also on target after Ian Ford had put Selsey 1-0 up on 17 minutes.
