EASTBOURNE scooped £70,000 lottery cash today to be pumped into the town's millennium plans.

Celebrations started when the borough council heard they had been awarded cash to fund an International Children's Conference on the Environment.

The event, supported by the UN, will be the largest gathering of ten to 12-year-olds in the world in the millennium.

Organisations across Sussex this morning received millions of pounds of cash as the latest round of lottery grants were announced.

Cash awards came from the Millennium Commission, The Arts Council of England, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the English Sports Council and the National Lottery Charities Board.

Eastbourne scooped the second highest amount in Sussex, winning just under Brighton and Hove Council's windfall of £75,000.

East Sussex County Council were also awarded £25,000 for their 2000 for 2000 project and Artability South East are to get £27,000 for their 2001 Words, Notes & Images - Your Voice for the Millennium.
