THE case of Robert Oliver has been taken to the Home Office by Brighton and Hove Council leader Lord Bassam, the police and the towns' three MPs.

They would like to see changes in the law on convicted paedophiles such as Oliver, who was in Brighton late last year. As Oliver, a convicted child killer, had served his sentence there was little anyone could do to enforce supervision despite great concern among parents that he could offend again. In the event, Oliver voluntarily agreed to live in a secret place in Sussex before moving to a treatment centre near Milton Keynes. It would be a good idea, as Lord Bassam suggests, if convicted paedophiles were obliged to be supervised to prevent similar problems occurring in the future. The case of Oliver hit the headlines but other paedophiles could soon be released from prison without proper supervision and no public knowledge unless the law is altered.
