I'm training so hard right now, I'm concerned I may be responsible for wearing out the tarmac on my usual routes from Brighton to Ovingdean.

I'm well aware after the harsh winter we had, that the council needs all the spare tar it can get its mitts on to cover the vast array of pot holes it already has. So being the thoughtful type, for my 15 miler this Saturday I decided to run in the opposite direction towards Worthing and wear out their tarmac instead.

My running partner joined me so after us both downing one of my speciality protein shakes we headed off along Albion Street towards Shoreham. With a few back street diversions to avoid the Saturday shoppers we headed over the bridge past Shoreham Airport.

It seemed a bit quiet compared to our runs in Brighton which usually consisted of tripping over various breeds of dogs on the seafront to narrowly escaping white van bonnets in Rottingdean. We trotted on through Lancing and on towards Worthing finally getting past Worthing Pier and making the first 7.5 miles.

On our route back towards Southwick the weather was starting to take a turn for the worse but the coolness of the light rain coming down was quite pleasant at that stage. My GPS started to play up after 10 miles but luckily we had finished halfway so it had to be the same distance back.

As we got through Shoreham town centre the heavens opened and the two of us were soaked at this point. I love the rain and to run in it is quite exhilarating but I had accumulated a lot of salt on my face from the sweat. The rain was getting into my eyes along with the salt and stinging so much I could hardly open them.

This went on for a couple of minutes and I tried to keep my pace. I must have looked a picture to the queue of static traffic at the temporary traffic lights but when you get to that stage you really don't care what you look like.

We arrived back at the Studio in Lady Bee Marina looking like a pair of drenched rats in 2 hours 31 mins, not too shabby. Now where's that cup of tea?
