There are new plans for the former Caffyns site on Kingsway at the bottom of Roman and Brittany roads on Hove seafront.

A proposal by Berkeley Homes to build a 12-storey block of 98 flats, which would have been inappropriate for the area, was thrown out by the planning committee in March with an unusually high 12 objections.

The latest plans can be viewed at the 330 Kingsway pub tomorrow, from 10am to 4pm, and on Saturday, July 2, from 10am to 2pm.

Berkeley Homes failed to inform residents about this public meeting. Instead, councillor Gary Pelzer Dunn did. There was also a small notice in The Leader.

Hopefully, planners will have looked carefully at the planning committee's reasons for its previous refusal and taken into account more than 150 letters objecting to Berkeley Homes' initial plan.

Hove residents were praised by the chair of the planning committee, Mayor Bob Carden, for their letters, which cited specific planning rules and regulations.

Whatever is built should be no higher than Saxon Court next to the former Caffyns site, which is not "at the entrance to the city",

as the architects put in their last planning application.

This is a family-orientated, residential area and we don't want a high-rise block of flats. Planning officers said there wasn't the infrastructure to accommodate this number of people here.

Haven't we learnt from the past? Sixties-style high-rise blocks are unsuitable for families for many reasons. Let's not make the same mistakes of the past.

If you are interested in the future of Hove, go and view the plans. Put your comments down for the architects and Berkeley Homes to see. The future is in our hands. This is the only opportunity to comment on the plans.
