One woman was arrested as police closed down what they described as "crack houses" in Brighton.

Needles and other drug paraphernalia were discovered as police raided two flats on two floors of a property in London Road. Neighbours, nearby businesses and the housing association which owns the properties, had complained to police of drug use and related antisocial behaviour.

Crack cocaine, heroin and ecstasy were discovered when police raided the flats previously. Police moved in again yesterday afternoon and served a closure notice, giving them powers to immediately evict any non-tenant in the building and to order tenants to court.

Two people left and a third, a woman in her 40s, was led away in handcuffs.

Police said she had failed to attend court on a charge of threatening behaviour.

The sitting tenants have been summoned to appear before Brighton magistrates tomorrow, when they could be banned from the premises.

This was only the second time such an order has been executed in the city but police warned more could be on their way.

Inspector Nev Kemp said: "Anyone using their property for illicit purposes, including drugs, can expect a door knock from us. We will not tolerate these crack houses or the antisocial behaviour that so often goes along with them."

Mr Kemp said the housing association would be determined to ensure more suitable tenants were housed there in future. He said: "The association and Brighton and Hove City Council have co-operated and assisted us throughout this process.

"We are all of the same mind and we will be looking closely at other properties in the near future. This is an on-going process."

Mr Kemp urged anyone with information about drug use to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999."
