A girls' night out ended in misery when a pint glass was thrown in a pub giving a mother-of-one two black eyes.

Catherine Weber was out with her 19-year-old daughter Marie when the glass caught her in the face and sent her flying.

The unprovoked attack, which left Mrs Weber, 45, with bruised eyes and a large bump on her head, took place at the Whistlestop Inn in Station Road, Portslade.

Mrs Weber, who had been drinking coke all night, said: "I was just sitting there and all of a sudden a glass came from out of nowhere and hit me. It was thrown with real force and it really hurt.

"It was definitely thrown deliberately, it came at me so hard. It wasn't an accident.

"I was just sitting there minding my own business when all of a sudden the glass came at my face. It was like a bullet coming at my head.

"People looked shocked. The landlady got some ice in a towel and I said to my daughter, Phone your dad to come and get me'."

Because she was hit with the base of the glass it stayed in one piece and she was not cut.

She was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and given painkillers.

Recovering at home, Mrs Weber, of Fishersgate Close in Portslade, said: "I am worried every time I go to bed at night.

"I get all anxious and can't get to sleep because I think something's going to happen to me. It makes me feel panicky."

Her daughter Marie was badly shaken by the incident.

Mrs Weber said: "She was crying, she was really upset. She's got bad nerves already, the same as me, and this doesn't help.

"I don't suppose the police will get much evidence because no one will want to speak out about what they saw."

Her husband Steve, 52, said: "There were a lot of people in the pub and somebody must have seen what happened.

"There had been no trouble so it was completely out of the blue.

"I want to find out who did this and take them to court. She could have been blinded, it is so dangerous.

"I can't believe somebody threw a glass and nobody saw it. Unless something is done, this person will get away with it and it will happen again."

A police spokeswoman said the incident had not been investigated straight away because Mrs Weber had not reported it.

Officers would now contact her and look into the assault.
