In more than ten years cycling the city's streets, on the one occasion I crashed, a car turned across in front of me and I went over its bonnet.

While cars and pedestrians streamed past, the only person who stopped to assist me was the driver of a juggernaut.

Lorry and bus drivers are always the most courteous to cyclists - thumbs ups and waves are regularly exchanged.

The hatred all seems to come from car drivers, sitting alone in gridlocked streets, swearing and banging the steering wheel in frustration like little children.

Leave it at home. You'll get to town quicker and happier.
