Well said, Valerie Paynter. She surely expresses the views of thousands of frustrated tax payers, who believe a broad section of youngsters in our city are not receiving a fair deal on facilities (Letters, April 7).

The city needs more well-organised venues where youngsters of all ages can enjoy safe recreation and social leisure.

Having led the community campaign for a new ice arena at Brighton Black Rock, Keep Sussex Skating (KSS) is launching an action campaign for roller skaters who urgently need a new purpose-built venue for indoor roller sports plus public roller skating and tuition.

A proposal has been submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council.

Back in the Nineties, a KSS initiative in partnership with Brighton Council introduced the sport of British Inline Skater Hockey into Brighton, which was launched at the outdoor roller skating area in Preston Park.

During the winter, hockey went indoors at the King Alfred Leisure Centre with the help of Hove Council. There was both hockey and public roller skating.

Through the years, hockey on roller skates has gone from strength to strength and now the teams need a specific indoor centre to build on their medal winning success at regional, national and international level.

The KSS campaign launch and game plan is designed for winning more medals for the city's sports profile. We urge the council to respond positively.

Skaters who bring merit to the city deserve a valid chance of a venue of their own for serious training. Come on city council, get your skates on.
