A mother found stabbed, raped and burnt in a seafront shelter may have been embroiled in a row hours before her macabre killing.

Police today said a woman fitting the description of Jennifer Kiely was seen with a red-haired man outside the Atlantic Hotel in Pevensey Road, Eastbourne.

The argument happened at about 6pm on Friday, January 21, and police today made an appeal for any information about the man.

At 5.15am the following morning, the body of Jennifer was found stabbed 16 times on Eastbourne seafront.

The development emerged as police sifted through information yielded after an appeal on last night's BBC Crimewatch programme.

It explained how two council litter pickers found Jennifer's corpse in a thatched shelter at Holywell, east of Beachy Head.

A child's buggy was found next to her body. Detectives on Operation Kittiwake described the murder as the most macabre they have dealt with.

Dental records had to be used to confirm the identity of 35-year-old Jennifer, originally from south London.

Despite the arrests of two men who were later bailed, plus a £10,000 reward, no one has been charged with her killing.

The programme featured Jennifer's last known movements and an interview with her ex-partner, John.

He has described the mother-of-three as a caring, friendly person who left the family home six years ago and became a transient.

John, the father to her daughter and two sons, said she had a mental illness and had spent time living in hostels in Kent and Sussex.

Pat Awcock, a community services co-ordinator at the Salvation Army in Langney Road, Eastbourne, gave an insight into Jennifer's life.

She said: "Jennifer was coming to us five days a week, Monday to Friday, for food in the six weeks prior to her murder.

"When she was here she was shy, reticent even. She didn't want to speak about where she came from or what she was doing. She said she was passing through.

"She wouldn't give any details about herself. She was the type of person who would withdraw into herself if pushed for information."

New appeals were made today for several people seen in the area before Jennifer's body was discovered.

They included two women in their 30s, speaking English but with a foreign accent, who were seen walking along the seafront towards Holywell between 1am and 2am.

Also asked to come forward was a baseball-cap wearing cyclist in the same area at the same time and two men of Mediterranean appearance walking towards Holywell.

In addition, detectives appealed to a man dressed in black with an east European accent asking the Grand Hotel manager directions to the station at about 3am.

And at about the same time another man was seen running down Grand Parade. He was dressed all in black, with a black beanie hat and white trainers.

The driver of a vehicle which swerved to avoid a man walking in the middle of Compton Street at about 3am was also asked to contact police.

Anyone with information should call the Operation Kittiwake incident room on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
