Natasha Kaplinsky was named Newscaster of the Year at the annual TRIC awards yesterday.

The Strictly Come Dancing winner, who grew up near Lewes, beat BBC colleagues Huw Edwards and George Alagiah to the title.

Since joining the BBC, the 32-year-old has been earmarked as one of the Corporation's biggest stars.

And she proved to have the golden touch when two of her programmes also won prizes.

Strictly Come Dancing was named best TV entertainment programme and BBC Breakfast, which Miss Kaplinsky co-hosts, beat ITV 1's This Morning and Channel 4's Richard and Judy for the award for best daytime programme.

The TRIC awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, are voted by members of the Television and Radio Industries' Club.

Coronation Street beat EastEnders and Emmerdale to the title of best TV soap.

Jonathan Ross was named best radio personality while the prize for best TV personality went to Ant and Dec.

Little Britain won best TV comedy and Spooks won best TV drama.

Other prizes went to Sian Lloyd for best weather presenter, Jamelia, for best music personality and John Inverdale for best sports presenter.

Radio 4's long-running panel show I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue won best radio programme and the prize for best music and arts programme went to Michael Palin's Himalaya.
