Andy Atkin grabbed a debut hat-trick for Sussex as they produced a terrific team performance to sink hosts Cornwall and book a place in the South West Counties Championship final.

John Suter's high flyers ended the hosts' 100 per cent record to book a place in the final against The Army next month.

Suter, who flew down to Newquay with his squad, said: "Andy Atkin got a hat-trick but it really was a terrific team performance. It was not a one-man show.

"Our goalkeeper Ian Chatfield made a couple of good saves, Leon Legge did well at the back along with Andy Beech, in fact, there were many really good performances throughout the team.

"It means we have played five and won five, scored 15 goals and conceded two. That's not bad."

Atkin, who came off contract with Eastbourne United so he could play for the county, opened the scoring after a well-worked move on 39 minutes which saw the ball worked to him via Legge, Pat Harding and finally James Grant before his strike found a top corner.

It was a crucial goal after Sussex had battled strong winds and rain in the first half.

Sussex turned the screw after the break. Atkin stole in at the far post on 58 minutes to prod in a Grant cross before completing the scoring on 78 minutes when he forced the ball home from close range following a Daren Pearce corner which was headed back across goal by Ali Russell.
