In answer to the numerous recent letters on traffic and parking problems in Brighton, the fault lies with both central and local government who will not face up to reality.
No matter how congested the roads become, public transport is not a viable alternative to the freedom of the car.
Some people who live in the city centre and have no desire to travel anywhere else can probably manage without a car.
For the rest of us, the car is a modern necessity.
Whenever we go shopping, we travel to either Crawley, Horsham or Eastbourne.
Those towns have realised the way to ease traffic congestion and road pollution is to enable the car to make a quick, trouble-free journey to the city centre car parks where £2 gives you half-a-day's parking.
And there is one other thing about those other Sussex towns - they are a lot cleaner and you can wander around without a sense of intimidation.
