Charlie Mapes has asked to go on the transfer list at Crawley because he wants to play regular football.

The 22-year-old midfielder has lost patience with manager Francis Vines after starting just three of the last 14 league games.

Mapes joined Reds from Wycombe in the summer and would like to return to the professional game.

The former Tottenham trainee admits he does not want to leave The Broadfield Stadium but insists he will have no choice if he continues to be left on the bench.

He said: "I am 22 and I need to being playing regular football. That is all it is and if I can't get it at Crawley then I will have to go somewhere else.

"I told Francis I wanted to go on the transfer list and he was not happy about it and said he wanted me to stay.

"I would love to because I love the club and the supporters. Everyone has been great to me but it is not doing me any good being on the bench every week.

"I don't want people to misunderstand me. It may sound selfish and some people might say I am not showing desire but I think it is the opposite because I have the desire to play."

Mapes was a regular earlier in the season and started the first 15 league games. His impressive form was one of the main reasons for Reds' flying start in the Conference.

His performances resulted in selection for the provisional England semi-professional squad in October.

The arrival of Simon Wormull from Hornchurch in November coincided with Mapes being dropped and he has struggled to regain his place since then.

He said: "You don't become a bad player overnight. When I was playing regularly we were doing really well and I was on the verge of the England team.

"I got the player-of-the-month award from the fans and was really enjoying it. I injured my heel and played through it and my form dipped.

"I was not playing terribly, just not as good as I had been, but the team were still winning games.

"When I look back I maybe should have rested because since then I have been out of favour."

Mapes was handed his first league start for a month in Tuesday's 3-0 home win over Tamworth, a result that catapulted Reds from eighth to second in a congested top half of the table.

He believes he has done enough to keep his place for Monday's Sky TV game against Morecambe but is not confident he will be given another chance.

He added: "I have told Francis I am willing to play anywhere in midfield. I thought I was going to get a start at Woking last week because we had injuries but I was not even in the squad.

"I then went straight into the side against Tamworth, so I don't really know where I stand. I thought I didn't do myself an injustice on Tuesday. The team played well and we won but I still don't feel I will be in the team next time.

"It will be interesting to see who gets picked for the Morecambe game. If I'm not in the side then I will know for sure that I will probably need to leave to get a chance."

Meanwhile, Vines believes loan signing Joe Healy can make a big impact at Reds.

Healy joined from Millwall this week for a month and is expected to be included in the squad for the Morecambe game.

The 18-year-old striker has made four first team substitute appearances for the Lions this season and made his debut against Liverpool in the Carling Cup last October.

Healy is the second player Millwall have loaned Crawley this season, following defender Joe Dolan's three-month spell which ended at the beginning of January.

Vines said: "Joe is only 18 but we played Millwall reserves earlier in the season and he was quite impressive.

"He comes highly recommended and should be a good addition to the squad. I would like to thank Millwall for once again helping us out with a loan signing. If he makes half the impact Dolan did, then I will be extremely happy."
