I read with interest Michael Parker's nostalgic letter in which he recalled the now-lost shops of London Road.

One of the businesses he mentioned is Mitchells.

This company started life in London Road in 1917 in the premises where the HSBC Bank is at present - with my grandfather's family living above the shop.

However, Mitchells is still alive and very well.

In the early Nineties, it relocated to a large unit in Burgess Hill and, by specialising in motor paints, has become and still is the largest distributor in the whole of Sussex and, indeed, beyond.

From time to time Mitchells advertises in The Argus supporting relevant motor trade customers.

If Mr Parker would like to visit us, he can see the expanded firm that still has Mitchell's name above the door.
