Sussex's Olly Phillips has been offered a two-year contract extension by Premiership club Newcastle Falcons, but hasn't committed himself long-term to the club just yet.

The 22-year-old wing from Brighton is in the middle of a one-year deal, but he impressed Falcons' management with his performances in the IRB Sevens Series events in Dubai and South Africa earlier this month.

The former Brighton College student said: "Rob Andrew (Falcons director of rugby) has told me the club want to extend my contract by two years.

"I think my promotion onto the international scene coupled with working hard in training and doing okay in club matches has prompted the decision.

"I do see myself staying with Newcastle for a few years. It has gone well for me.

"I've been helped by having players with the stature of Jonny Wilkinson around. We have become good mates.

"I'm loving it at the club, but I am waiting to see if other clubs come forward with an offer. Then I will weigh it all up. I have an agent sorting that side of things out."

Phillips helped England reached the semi-finals of the second event of the Sevens series in Johannesburg. England lost in the semi-finals to Fiji after they had won the Dubai event.

Phillips said: "I played in four matches which included the game against Fiji. I thought I played alright.

"It was another great experience and Dubai was excellent too. It all helps towards developing me as a player."

Phillips is hopeful of being chosen in the squad for the third and fourth events in the series in Los Angeles and Wellington at the end of next month.

The former Hove player hopes to make Falcons' replacements bench for Monday's clash against Leeds Tykes and their next Premiership fixture with Sale Sharks.

He added: "I've made the bench a few times for the first team this season so I'm keeping my fingers crossed."

Phillips was given Christmas off by Andrew to re-charge his batteries after a hectic schedule.

He said: "Most of the boys at Newcastle live no more than an hour from the club. But as I'm about five or six, Rob told me to get myself away. It's good to be back home catching up with friends."
