A world roller-cycling record has been beaten for the third year in succession at Gatwick Airport.

Two teams of riders from the Crawley-based 21st Century Airports Club, plus several guest riders, kept two bikes mounted on rollers spinning for 12 hours. They covered the equivalent of 873 miles to beat their own world record, set last year, of 857 miles.

Organiser Eric Clark said: "Our star guest rider Sean Yates had to pull out, but we had great support from other guest riders such as Colin Tamon, Tony Killick and Graham Kerr.

"The last hour was nail-biting but the spectators urged the riders on and after passing last year's total they piled on some more miles. The 873 miles was a really impressive new total."

Polegate rider James Dear (In Gear) is still leading the London Cyclo-Cross League overall despite finishing sixth in Sutton CC's race at Hillingdon.

Dear said: "I've won the Sussex League and I would like to do the double but I seem to be losing a bit of form just as other riders are beginning to improve."
