Perhaps you can shed some light on the projected sewage pipeline survey works (The Argus, December 10) or perhaps one of your readers has the necessary information.
1) What or who gives Southern Water the right to flout all the policies re greenfield sites? How ironic it is that good clean land should be considered for a sewage farm/factory!
2) Why should the sewage, 80-90 per cent of which will be coming from Brighton, be planned for the above greenfield site in Peacehaven when Brighton has at least two contaminated areas which could be used. It is time Brighton accepted responsibility for its own sewage and refuse and dealt with its own doorstep problems instead of pushing them out into East Sussex.
3) Who will be responsible for the A259 if the proposed pipeline causes collapse? At some places, the cliff edge is only feet away from the road. Who will reimburse householders if the drilling undermines the footings of properties or if insurance companies either raise their premiums or refuse to cover?
Southern Water has caused problems on the only road feeding the coast from East Saltdean to Newhaven.
Even if the A259 survives this onslaught, it will seize up with Southern Water's heavy vehicles.
Will Southern Water provide the means (ie helicopters?) to get people to their homes?
-Mrs M J Goldrich, Peacehaven
