Adam Trimingham is right to draw attention to the complexities of Cycling as a part of integrated transport (The Argus, December 15).

Cycling is underrated both by national and local government and the railway authority which allowed new trains to be built without passenger goods compartments for bulky luggage and bicycles.

Along the South Coast, national parks are being created. These will prove to be popular venues for touring and local cyclists.

I have a photograph taken at Brockenhurst station, Hants, which depicts a former Southern railway carriage in a siding which advertises "bicycling holidays cycle hire" and exhorts us to "explore the New Forest by bicycle".

When the South Downs also becomes a national park, such businesses could well spring up all along the Coastway mainline, from Southampton Central to Ashford International.

As the coast roads increasingly grind to a standstill and become impassable even to cyclists, new trains will be needed to meet the increased demand for the carriage of bicycles accompanying touring cyclists, school pupils and commuters.
