It would be funny if it weren't so serious.

The enforcement department of Worthing Council has completely misunderstood the law and thus played into the hands of the various parties who want to play fast and loose with our country's relationship with the rest of Europe.

Advertising regulations are national law and cover, as you would expect, the control of adverts.

In order to make it clear to anyone who doesn't understand what

an advert is, the regulations specifically state national flags are not included.

They most certainly do not say any visual device which is not a national flag is an advertisement.

That is obviously ludicrous.

The flag of the European Union is not an advertisement, for goodness sake, and Worthing Borough Council really should send the officers who think it is back to school.

Whether or not people like or dislike the concept of a European Union, is quite another matter and nothing to do with advertising regulations.
