Medieval carol meets Sinatra swing in the latest offering from this 15-strong a capella choir.

Formed in 1998 by composers Richard Chew and Hove-based Orlando Gough, The Shout emanate from musical backgrounds which span cabaret, gospel, classical, Indian, improvisation and folk - a range and depth evident in their melodic harmonies and pitch-perfect vocals.

Hard to pigeonhole, The Shout has been labelled a variety of things from "a vocal big band" to a "Choir of Babel". The singers, though not trained actors, are keen to pursue theatre through music and relish the challenge of exploring unknown territory.

The choir performs without scores or a conductor and the sound is intertwined with a diverse collection of Christmas Day diary entries.

These thoughts contextualise and link up familiar festive favourites and contemporary offerings, such as Christmas Pudding - a tuneful list of food additives following an abundant description of greed and indulgence at New College Oxford, 1773.

Jean Cocteau's mischievous musings lighten the mood after the poignant entry of Bresslau prisoner, Rosa Luxembourg, who wrote on Christmas day 1917:

"I lie here alone and in silence, enveloped in the manifold black wrappings of darkness, tedium, unfreedom, and winter."

A Day In The Life has been described as a "glorious celebration of the human voice in all its diversity". It taps into the spirit of Christmas in a unique way, leaving a rich and lasting impression - with not a sniff of tinsel in its wake.
