Office and factory staff are switched on to working harder if they can listen to the radio at the same time, new research has shown.

A survey of almost 2,000 people showed most believed they were happier and more positive if they could tune into a radio programme.

Almost half said they had a radio on at work, often helping distract them from a boring job.

One in four risked upsetting colleagues by turning the volume up when a favourite song came on or doing impressions of singers.

Neil Gould of Powergen, which conducted the poll, said: "Of all the electrical gadgets designed to make us more efficient at work, it seems the humble radio could actually be the answer to keeping us positive when things get stressful."

Music stations such as Radio 1 and Capital were the favourites to work to, with just three per cent preferring to listen to Classic FM. One in 20 workers said they listened to music on personal CD players.
