Darren Hudson was the hero as second division Midhurst held their nerve to topple Rye and reach the semi-finals of the Sussex RUR Cup.

Hudson smashed home the decisive penalty as Tim Dummer's side won the shoot-out 5-4 after the teams had shared six goals in normal and extra time.

Midhurst looked in control when Chris May and James Glue gave them a 2-0 lead. But the visitors forced extra time with goals in the last three minutes from Phil Rhodes and Peter Baker.

Rhodes then made it 3-2 but Scott May forced penalties with a late third for the home side.

Dummer said: "We had to throw in a few youngsters because players were unavailable which worried me but they were all superb."

Midhurst face a local derby against Chichester in the semis while holders East Grinstead completed the line-up for the last four after a 3-2 extra time triumph at Eastbourne Town. Grinstead overcame the absence of top scorer Kris Trevor to win with goals from Dave Gellatly, substitute Ben Burns and Adam Dart. Luke Denton and Scott King netted for Town.

Manager Bob Smith said: "I was really pleased for Ben Burns. He had an injury at the start of the season and then couldn't get back into the side but he will always get goals and hopefully that will kick-start his season."

Grinstead face Ringmer in the semi-finals and have a quarter-final at home to Sidley to look forward to in the John O'Hara League Cup as well.

Sidley head to East Court after they won 2-0 at second division Westfield.

Jimmy Watson and youngster Lewis Hole got the goals. Lewis is the son of Nigel Hole, a prolific goalscorer in the County League in the 1980s and 1990s.

Pat Dunning's double gave Three Bridges a 2-0 win over Littlehampton and earned them a quarter-final at home to Hassocks.
