The coolest reality TV star around - and the only Pop Idol to maintain any sort of longevity, it's difficult not to like Will Young.

For a start he's a nice bloke with a pretty face and a down-to-earth sense of humour.

He also admirably sidestepped The Daily Mail's whispered campaign about his sexuality by coming out in public.

Then there's the voice full of jazzy inflections, which has proved to lend itself rather nicely to improvisation and a personal touch.

But none of this guarantees long-term success without good music which gets better rather than worse.

Will's first album, From Now On, received a mixed response.

Some complained at the profusion of cover versions, while others compared it favourably to Gareth's as a timeless and impressive debut.

The second, Friday's Child, which includes songs Will has written himself, won more widespread praise.

"If you're good enough, you stay around and, if you're not, you don't," says Will.

"You can't demand to be taken seriously, especially where I've come from."
