Will a waste incinerator be built in Newhaven? At the Defenders of the Ouse Valley and Estuary (DOVE) meeting at Hillcrest on November 23, the answer was a defiant "no".

The next day, the leader of East Sussex County Council (ESCC) said in a cabinet meeting: "Yes, it's decided for Newhaven, why are protesters here?"

In his report in June 2004, the waste planning inquiry inspector said: "Could be, could be not. Plans to build and operate will have to get planning permission and some plans would be inappropriate."

It is clear from waste plan responses and the town council's continued rejection of Onyx's offers of informal talks that Seaford and Newhaven residents, businesses and organisations do not want an incinerator.

It is convenient for Brighton and Hove City Council, ESCC and Onyx to say an incinerator is inevitable.

However, the planning application is not anticipated to be submitted until June 2005. An incinerator in Newhaven is not inevitable. This is a winnable fight.
