Albion manager Mark McGhee today gave misfiring marksman Leon Knight a massive vote of confidence.

McGhee insists Knight would be as prolific as he was for the Seagulls last season if he was playing for one of the top teams in the Championship.

Knight, 27-goal hero of the promotion campaign, has notched only twice so far this term, one a penalty.

He has been dropped to the bench for two of the last three matches and started in-between against Burnley on the right flank, rather than up front.

"Leon's on the bench because it's not going in the back of the net at the moment," McGhee said.

"We'll keep working with him, trying to get him back to his best and finding a way to get him scoring goals at this level.

"Leon is a tremendous finisher and if he was playing in a team who were really dominating games from the start of the season then he would have a lot of goals. He would be top scorer in the division, there's no doubt in my mind about that.

"We haven't been dominating games, although I believe we've got a lot better and are presenting him with chances that I think he now has to start converting."

Knight, denied two late penalties after coming on at Ipswich last Saturday, is expected to return to the starting line-up for Saturday's key home game against bottom club Rotherham.

Knight is poised to partner Steve Claridge for the first time, as Albion's financial problems are likely to prevent them signing Mark McCammon on loan from Millwall for a month.
