Eastbourne Borough secured their place in the third round but made heavy work of it against Burgess Hill.

Borough needed a dramatic 89th minute equaliser from Loui Fazackerley to force extra-time after Steve Harper had found the net for the Hillians in the first half.

With Borough eventually running out 3-1 winners, the scoreline flattered the hosts who were made to fight for their victory.

In the first half Borough applied plenty of pressure early on but failed to capitalise.

Top scorer Scott Ramsay and Fazackerley both had chances inside the first ten minutes but the former Fulham man met his match in Burgess Hill goalkeeper Pat Gannon.

The Hillians were always in the game and good work up front on 21 minutes from Harper and Graham Webb forged an opening for left-back Owen Callaghan to test Lee Hook in the Borough goal.

The visitors got their breakthrough on 37 minutes when a great move saw Harper break into the box and fire a low right foot shot past Hook.

With possession split evenly between the sides, the misfiring Priory Lane outfit failed to take their chances in the final third.

The second period picked up where the first had finished with Borough failing to find the net.

A corner from Danny Simmonds triggered a goalmouth scramble which Callaghan deflected for another corner and a follow up effort from Ramsay was well saved by Gannon.

On 59 minutes, after pressure from Hillians striker Webb, Hook handled outside the box and went into the referee's book.

Continued pressure from Borough saw a right foot drive from Ramsay strike a post but Gannon had the shot well covered.

Burgess Hill hit the bar themselves in the 75th minute with subsitute Neil Watts seeing his powerful drive coming back off the woodwork.

Then in the 89th minute new signing Dan Beck swung over a cross which Ramsay knocked down and Fazackerley turned home for his first goal for the Borough.

In the first half of extra-time a clumsy challenge in the box from Watts felled Borough substitute Ollie Rowland and Ramsay cooly slotted the resultant spot kick past the superb Gannon into the bottom right hand corner.

By now Burgess Hill had run out of ideas and Rowland finally made the tie safe for Borough with a drive in the 116th minute.
