Contrary to the inflammatory and misleading letter sent to parents by David Hawker, Director of Children, Families and Schools, teaching assistants will not be earning inflated salaries of up to £21,000 plus.
We defy Brighton and Hove Council to find one member of support staff anywhere who approaches this salary level.
Also, much of any additional funding will fall onto schools who already have to manage on over-stretched budgets.
Offers of promotion, new career structure and better conditions of service are a fallacy. What is proposed is a package that means staff effectively fund their own so-called pay rise.
We deeply regret taking action. However it can be seen as an indication of our frustration and concern at the attitude and behaviour of our employer.
It is rare that we as a group have ever taken action.
This is an indication of our concern and reaction to the unreasonable position taken by our employers.
-Lucy Butland, UNISON representative Hillside School, Brighton
