Albion's Adam Virgo is in shock today after earning an international call-up, thanks to his manager and a long lost relative.

Virgo has been named in Scotland's Future squad for a friendly against Germany in Mannheim next Tuesday.

He is one of only two English-based players, along with Blackburn Rovers striker Paul Gallagher, to be included by temporary Scotland boss Tommy Burns in the 17-strong squad, which is viewed as a stepping stone to the full team.

The Argus exclusively revealed last month that manager Mark McGhee had recommended Virgo to his country. The Brighton-born youngster qualifies for Scotland via his grandmother on his mother's side of the family.

She passed away when his mum, also deceased, was still in her teens.

"It's really good news," said Virgo. "I'm a bit shocked really, but I am looking forward to it.

"It's a great honour for me to play for Scotland, even though they are not doing too well at the moment. It puts me in the window and it will be great experience for me playing against Germany.

"They will no doubt have some quality players. Hopefully I can make the most of it."

Virgo has been selected as a defender, his preferred position, even though McGhee has successfully converted him this season into a five-goal centre forward.

Former Glasgow Rangers and Everton boss Walter Smith, who has been offered the chance to succeed Berti Vogts as Scotland's manager, is likely to be at the game at the Carl Benz Stadium in Mannheim (6.30).

Virgo is the fourth young Albion player to gain international honours this season.

Dan Harding is the England under-21s regular leftback. He was recently joined in the squad by fellow Adam Hinshelwood, while midfielder Alexis Nicolas play for Cyprus under-21s.

McGhee said: "It's another sign of the progress the club are making.

"We're getting people recognised at international level. Regardless of whether Virgs goes on from here, he's at least got his foot in the door.

"That's brilliant for a player who still hasn't been given the opportunity to play in his favoured position."

Virgo serves the last of a three-match suspension against bottom club Rotherham at Withdean on Saturday.

He flies out with the Scots to Frankfurt next Monday and Albion will be hoping he stays fit for the trip to Millwall five days later.

Meanwhile, Albion have renewed their contract with Italian-based kit suppliers Errea for another three years.

The Seagulls' current home shirt remains unchanged for next season, but they will have a new away strip.
