The Go! Team are the kind of band that are hard to pin down.

The Brighton-based sextet have confused the critics, and when they are mentioned they are generally associated with a list of genres ranging from hip-hop and indie through to funk and electro.

Songwriter Ian P seems to find attempts to label the band amusing. "It's funny to see which section we get put in in the record shops," he says.

The Go! Team are probably best described as a jumble of breaks, beats, samples and guitar. Certainly difficult to define, they are much easier to like.

They've been on the receiving end of some real acclaim from some of the music industry's biggest voices and the NME has described them as 'one of the greatest bands in the world today'.

Despite such praise, Ian isn't counting his chickens quite yet.

"I take those kind of comments with a pinch of salt," he says. "One week it's like that, but the next it could be a different matter."

Even if The Go! Team aren't getting excited about their success, big business certainly is. They have already shunned offers from McDonald's, Vodafone and BBC 3, all wanting a track as the theme tune for their product.

But The Go! Team are not here to be used in advertisements, and never want to become a band remembered for one track on a television commercial.

So critical acclaim and fast-food chains are of no importance to The Go! Team. What matters is their music, on stage and in the studio.

They recorded their debut album Thunder, Lightning, Strike in a basement, a setting that fits perfectly with the group's approach to recording music.

"We formed as a lo-fi, bedroom based band" says Ian. "But of course we are a live band too."

The six piece consists of three lads from Brighton and three girls from London who got together through a shared love of the various styles of music The Go! Team adore. They feature two drummers and some regular instrument swapping in their eclectic, energetic sets.

"We're more ballsy when we're playing live" says Ian. "Our singer Ninja in particular bullies the crowd into getting up and getting going."

The Go! Team look like they are going to be big, and they sound like nothing that has come before, regardless of the attempts to describe them through genres of the past.

Their album is out now, although finding where it has been filed in the record shop might take some time.
