I would like to add a few points to Jon Rogers' letters (November 19).

As a parent of a child in one of the city's excellent special schools, I know it is often the most vulnerable children - those with special educational needs - who gain so much from dedicated teaching assistants.

They benefit from support in mainstream schools right through to the vital, often one-to-one, support which is often a requirement in our special schools. Some schools could not function without these assistants.

They often have a wealth of experience in dealing with not just learning difficulties but also physically disabled children and associated behavioural problems.

They should not be underestimated because many of them are worth their weight in gold.
