A prisoner who served just one year in a Turkish jail for murdering a Sunday school teacher has been sent to Broadmoor after attacking a cellmate while on remand at Lewes Prison.

Hakan Thomas Yagiz, 34, was sentenced to 36 years' hard labour in Turkey for killing Gill Montgomery at her flat in Cloudesley Road, St Leonards, eight years ago.

But the Turkish government freed him after just a year and he returned to Sussex.

Yagiz admitted assaulting Wayne Kingdom in a row over a bunk bed while he was at Lewes Prison in connection with charges relating to an assault.

He fractured Kingdom's jaw and kicked out four of his teeth, Lewes Crown Court heard yesterday.

Michael Warren, prosecuting, said: "Kingdom was on the top bunk. He jumped down to make some tea for both of them and as he came down his foot struck Yagiz's mattress.

"Yagiz said he had told him about stepping on his bed and as a result he slapped Kingdom, who fell to the floor, and kicked him in the head."

On Yagiz's return to the UK last year, he moved in with his family in Hastings but soon came to the attention of police.

Broadmoor specialist Dr Edward Petch said: "Since his return from Turkey, he has presented increasing symptoms of emerging mental illness and prior to arrest there were various episodes where his family felt they were at risk from him."

"It is difficult to predict the degree of anger he will show. There is clear evidence of schizophrenia."
