(Cert 15, 100 mins): Starring Daniel Craig, Samantha Morton, Rhys Ifans and Bill Nighy. Directed by Roger Michell

In a rare case of the film being better than the book (even author Ian McEwan agrees), Enduring Love is, despite the title, not just another British romantic comedy.

The star of Layer Cake, Daniel Craig, and the director of The Mother, Roger Michell (two recent films that have helped to breathe some life into our beleguered film industry), join forces with fellow class acts Samantha Morton, Rhys Ifans and Bill Nighy to give us a tale of love and obsession.

University lecturer Joe (Craig) and his sculptor girlfriend Claire (Morton) are enjoying a picnic in the countryside when they witness a tragic ballooning accident.

Joe is understandably traumatized by the experience so is fellow witness Jed Parry (Ifans), who latches on to Joe for emotional support.

However, as the stranger's interest in the lecturer intensifies, Joe realises he is the object of a dangerous obsession.

Taking McEwan's dark subject matter and injecting it with some much-needed black humour, Michell's assured direction and the lead trio's superb performances ensures this is a Brit flick with bite.
