So, after 21 years, we are to lose another institution in Hove, much loved and known by generations of children (The Argus, November 15).

Charlie Hosmer, a favourite with generations of visitors to St Ann's Well Gardens will sadly serve his last mug of tea later this month.

The council has decided to put his lease out to open tender. Charlie, 67, was shocked to learn his rental agreement would not be renewed, just months after he invested thousands of pounds in new equipment.

He has run Charlie's Cafe as a private business since 1983. I am pleased to read many customers have contacted The Argus in disgust.

Many are naturally heartbroken, as they have got to know Charlie well over the years.

The council will, I fear, give the cafe to the highest bidder. This is not what it is all about and does not always prove successful.

Charlie is disappointed with the plans for the cafe and now intends to move to Cornwall.

The council may well have received many applications to run the cafe but Charlie's absence will be another huge loss to the city and the residents who loved him and appreciated the service he has reliably provided over the years.
