Crawley manager Francis Vines has criticised the lack of ambition of the players released by cash-strapped Hornchurch.

Vines had hoped to make up to four new signings after the Urchins released their whole squad following a financial meltdown three weeks ago but has only been successful in capturing midfielder Simon Wormull.

Former Leyton Orient winger John Martin was due to meet with Vines this week but has opted to join full-time Conference south club Grays where he will play alongside four former Hornchurch team-mates.

Another target, Lee Elam, also knocked back Reds last week in favour of Conference strugglers Burton Albion.

Vines said: "It seems like it is all down to pounds, shillings and pence as far as these players are concerned. You would think they would want to test themselves at the highest level possible but that is not the case.

"It is surprising because we are in a good position in the league and pay pretty good money, even if it is not full-time wages."

The knock backs mean Vines is still struggling in his search for a left-sided player.

He added: "A lot of clubs are struggling to find one, right up to the highest level, that's why they are all snapped up quickly when they become available."
