I was very surprised there was no mention in The Argus of the death of my old opponent, Dave Elms of Brighton.
Tommy Farr and Don Cockell both used Dave for sparring sessions as they knew he would keep coming forward no matter what they threw at him.
He featured in the majority of big bills that were being staged at the time by such promoters as Freddie Mills and Jack Solomons at venues such as Harringey Arena, Earls Court, and the Albert Hall. He actually won three fights in one night when he won Jack Solomons's Heavyweight Tourney.
The funeral was attended by a crowd of people who had come from all over to pay their last respects to this brave ex-boxer.
There were representatives from The London Ex-boxers Association, The Southern Ex-boxers and, of course, friends and representatives from the Sussex Ex-boxers Association.
I boxed Dave and, bearing in mind that at the time I was rated number five in Europe, Dave gave me one hell of a fight before I beat him. As a mark of respect to a man who was proud to be a Brighton man, it would be nice if you could give a little mention of his passing.
