Many people are quick to condemn cyclists for not using the cycle lanes provided and Brighton and Hove City Council even has wardens out to fine them on the spot, but it is pedestrians who need to clean up their acts.
Most cyclists are like most drivers in that they watch out for mishaps, but pedestrians do not think at all.
I have been Cycling since I was a small girl and am now 68. As you can imagine, I can't hare along like some, but last weekend a pedestrian walked out from behind a lamp post straight into the path of my bike with such force that his carton of vinegary chips went all down the front of my fleece and I was knocked flying to the ground.
He came from the road and was totally unaware there was a cycling lane.
This often happens, especially between West Street and Brighton Pier, where there are more pedestrians. I often ring my bell but when pedestrians suddenly step into the lane without any warning, cyclists don't stand a chance - and yet they take all the flak.
In fact, I think the lanes are far too narrow for the number of cyclists using them these days.
Surely, if cyclists are penalised for not using the cycling lanes then it is only fair the same rule applies to pedestrians.
There are "No Cycling" signs everywhere but none saying "No Pedestrians".
Please, can't something be done?
