Albion's top scorer Adam Virgo admitted today he will not be taking any chances in his fight to be fit to face West Ham.

Virgo is desperate to make Saturday's glamour trip to Upton Park after missing last month's visit to Sunderland through suspension.

But the defender turned centre forward is reluctant to risk the possibility of a longer spell on the sidelines with a freak leg injury.

"I don't really know at the moment whether I will be ready," Virgo revealed. "I am just taking it day by day. I will see what Malcolm Stuart (physio) and the doctor say.

"You always want to play, so I think I will be fit, but I don't want to rush back too quickly and end up being out for longer.

"West Ham is with Leeds and all the other big games. I've got a lot of friends going up there and I would be disappointed to miss out, but I would rather miss one game than five."

Virgo sat out last Saturday's home defeat by Crewe with severe swelling in the lower part of his right leg. He needed a hospital check-up and Albion feared at one stage he would require surgery.

"It's like a secondary bleed," Virgo said. "I got kicked about 12 days ago, I had a bubble of blood there and got kicked on it again on Friday.

"I trained as normal and felt fine but when I got home the blood vessels had burst, which set up a clot. Within the space of 20 minutes my shin just blew up and I couldn't walk on it at all."

Albert Jarrett, Jake Robinson and Maheta Molango are all pressing for a place on the bench against West Ham in the Reserves at Luton today (2pm).
