It was interesting to read Vera Allison's letter (November 1) about the "good Samaritan" traffic warden. These people people do a difficult job in the face of much public hostility.
However, I was puzzled by her location when walking through
the "South Lanes", as she called it. Having lived in Brighton all my
life, I was unaware that this ancient district had a north and a south.
The Lanes are bounded by North Street, Ship Street, Prince Albert Street and Market Street. The Town Hall, near where the incident occurred, is in Bartholomews.
I do hope she was not confusing The Lanes with North Laine, the site of a large, open field divided into strips by tracks called "leakways", along which streets now run.
Although the southern boundary of North Laine was Church Street (formerly Church Lane), the area between there and North Street is colloquially referred to as part of North Laine.
