I am very disappointed that Ivor Caplin has chosen to stand down at the next General Election.

As Nicholas Boles said, I do sympathise with him stopping while he is ahead. Yet I feel the residents of Hove and Portslade, as well as his own party, have somehow been cheated by this development.

Had he stood, the May elections would have acted as a referendum on his activities as an MP and as a minister.

They would have given voters a chance to act on their dissatisfaction with him and the Government he represented.

Not only will his resignation shatter hopes for his party to retain the seat, it will also deny us the chance to defeat him at the polls.
