Bosses who flout laws on employing schoolchildren could face a £1,000 fine or three months in prison, council officials have warned.
Information leaflets are now being sent to employers across the county, particularly those who traditionally hire children.
Officials at East Sussex County Council say no-one under 13 should be employed and youngsters eligible for work must not start before 7am. Certain types of work, including those with potentially dangerous equipment, are banned for young people and employment cards are needed for all children.
In the next 12 months, the council's child employment officer will be making spot checks on companies which hire young people.
The officer will also be visiting every school in East Sussex to explain child employment to pupils in school assemblies.
New leaflets for youngsters, called A Young Person's Guide To Part-Time Employment, are being sent to schools, youth clubs and libraries.
