Brighton and Hove City Council finance councillor Simon Burgess says "the market dictates the money we have to pay" (The Argus, October 28).

Perhaps he could explain why the market always says we must pay the rich more to encourage the best people for the job, but lower-paid workers, especially those in the caring professions, should be paid less so they don't just do it for the money?

I am a nursery nurse working for Brighton and Hove City Council. Like those who assist teachers, look after the sick or elderly, or dispose of our rubbish, we can hardly afford to live in Brighton, yet we are expected to do the jobs that keep this city going. We could survive as a city without any council fat cats but it would grind to a halt without nursery nurses, teaching assistants, nurses, refuse collectors, bus drivers and firefighters.
